Hello November, winter is well and truly on its way with the first sign of our car windscreens being frozen over when we went to get into the car this morning!
The air is getting colder, the leaves are falling and the wind is increasing! Fragile plants will need protecting from the freezing rains, gales and frost. Now is the time to move plants into the greenhouse or into a sheltered spot. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up.
We’ve got our top 10 November jobs for you here:
Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging
Clear up fallen leaves – especially from lawns, ponds and beds
Plant tulip bulbs for spring display next year
Prune Roses to prevent wind-rock
Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a problem
Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks
Insulate outdoor containers from frost – bubble wrap works well
Use a seasonal bonfire – where this is allowed – to dispose of excess debris unfit for composting
Plant out winter bedding.
Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into the garden
